Artist Notes on this Piece

I decided I wanted to do a portrait of my father who suddenly passed away from lung cancer in 2004, but I had no photos of him to work from. So I scoured the internet for photos to work from to piece together an image that resembled him.  I found little bits of him here and there. His eyes in someone else’s, his nose on some other face and  finally I came up with an image that yes anyone who knew him would say “That is Lonson.” I felt a sadness as I painted this, but when I was almost finished although I recognized him, I did not feel him there. Decidedly I took some of his ashes as he had been cremated and misted them into the still wet paint. After a good cry, I felt the power of his memory there.
